A Faith That Grows: Learning from Timothy’s Example (2 Timothy 1:5–6)

A Faith That Grows: Learning from Timothy’s Example

Introduction

Teaching children how faith grows is an important part of Christian education. Children often learn their first lessons about God from the people closest to them—parents, grandparents, and teachers. The Bible provides a wonderful example of this in the life of Timothy.

In 2 Timothy 1:5–6, the apostle Paul reminds Timothy about the sincere faith that first lived in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. Their love for God helped Timothy develop a strong and growing faith of his own.

This lesson is especially helpful for children because it shows that faith does not appear overnight. Instead, it grows little by little as we learn about God, listen to His Word, and practice living in ways that honor Him.

Through Timothy’s example, children can learn that God can use them even while they are young. When kids practice faith, listen to wise teachers, and develop self-control, they begin to grow into people who follow God faithfully.

This Sunday School lesson guide will help teachers explain the story clearly while also providing activities, discussion ideas, and teaching tools to help children remember the lesson.

The Bible Story Explained

Timothy was a young believer who played an important role in the early Christian church. Unlike some Bible characters who were kings or prophets, Timothy was known for his sincere and growing faith.

The Bible tells us that Timothy’s faith began in his own home. His grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice loved God and taught Timothy the Scriptures from a young age. They helped him understand who God is and why following Him matters.

Because of their example, Timothy learned to trust God early in his life. Their teaching planted the seeds of faith that continued to grow as Timothy matured.

Later, Timothy met the apostle Paul, who became his mentor and spiritual guide. Paul saw great potential in Timothy and encouraged him to help teach others about Jesus.

In one of his letters, Paul reminded Timothy about the faith he had learned from his family. Paul said that the same sincere faith that lived in Lois and Eunice was now living in Timothy as well.

But Paul also encouraged Timothy not to let fear stop him from serving God. He told Timothy to fan into flame the gift God had given him. This meant that Timothy should continue developing his faith and using his gifts to help others.

Even though Timothy was young, God used him to strengthen churches and teach believers. His life shows that God can use anyone who trusts Him and continues to grow in faith.

• How can your faith grow stronger?

Three Key Lessons for Kids

Lesson 1

Faith Can Grow in Our Hearts

Timothy’s story reminds children that faith often begins with learning from others. Timothy learned about God from his grandmother and mother. In the same way, children today can learn faith from parents, teachers, pastors, and Sunday School leaders.

When kids listen carefully to Bible stories, pray, and spend time learning about God, their faith begins to grow stronger.

Short Prayer
Lord, help my faith grow stronger every day.

Lesson 2

God Can Use Young People

Timothy was not an older leader when he started serving God. He was still young, but God used him in powerful ways.

Children can also serve God by helping others, sharing kindness, telling the truth, and encouraging friends.

Short Prayer
God, help me use my gifts to serve you.

Lesson 3

Faith Helps Us Practice Self-Control

Faith also helps children learn self-control. When kids trust God, they try to choose what is right even when it is difficult.

For example, faith helps children:

• tell the truth
• be kind
• obey parents
• stay calm when they feel angry

Short Prayer
Lord, help me choose what is right.
