David and Goliath – Trusting God to Face Your Giants

David and Goliath: A Lesson on Courage, Faith, and God’s Strength (Teacher Blog Post)

Big Idea (For Teachers)

The story of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17) is one of the best Bible lessons for kids because it teaches that:

  • bravery doesn’t come from muscles,

  • courage doesn’t come from age,

  • victory doesn’t come from weapons,

  • strength comes from trusting God.

This lesson helps children understand that even when they feel small, scared, or unsure, God can use them in powerful ways.

Story Summary (Kid-Friendly)

When a terrifying giant named Goliath challenged the army of Israel, the soldiers were frozen in fear. He was huge, strong, and carried heavy weapons. Everyone believed he was unbeatable.

But then came David—a young shepherd boy.

David didn’t have armor, a sword, or a shield. All he had was:

  • a slingshot

  • five smooth stones

  • and an unshakable faith in God

While others saw an impossible battle, David saw an opportunity to show God’s power. He boldly declared:

“The battle is the Lord’s!” (1 Samuel 17:47)

With just one stone and one faithful heart, David defeated the giant. Goliath fell, and Israel celebrated victory.

This story reminds us:

  • True strength comes from trusting God, not from size.

  • God helps His people face big problems.

  • Faith can defeat fear.

Memory Verse

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me.”
Psalm 28:7 (NIV)

Teacher Tip: Repeat the verse with motions:

  • “Lord” (point upward)

  • “strength” (show muscles)

  • “shield” (hands like a shield)

  • “trusts” (hands on heart)

  • “helps me” (reach forward)

3 Lessons from David’s Story

1) God uses ordinary people for extraordinary things

David was “just a shepherd,” but God saw a hero.

2) Faith is stronger than fear

David trusted God completely, even when everyone else was afraid.

3) With God, no giant is too big

No matter the challenge, God’s power is greater than any problem we face.

Discussion Questions (For Kids)

  1. What made David brave even though Goliath was huge?

  2. What “giants” make you feel scared sometimes?

  3. How can we trust God when we feel afraid?

Suggested Games for Kids (All Story-Related)

3 Indoor Games

1) “Smooth Stone Toss” (David’s Sling Practice)

Materials: paper balls/soft beanbags, basket/cup
Kids toss “stones” into a target while saying:
“God is my strength!”

2) “Giants vs. Faith” Freeze Game

Teacher calls:

  • “Giant!” → kids freeze (scared pose)

  • “Faith!” → kids jump and shout: “The battle is the Lord’s!”

3) “Armor Relay (Saul’s Armor Challenge)”

Use safe props (oversized jacket, scarf, helmet).
Kids try to walk like they’re wearing “Saul’s armor,” then remove it and run freely.
Lesson: We don’t need to copy others—God can use us as we are.

3 Outdoor Games

1) “Giant Tag”

One child is Goliath. Others are “Israel soldiers.”
Tagged kids freeze. A “David” can unfreeze them by saying:
“Trust in God!”

2) “Stone Run Challenge”

Place 5 cones (the “5 stones”) in a line.
Kids run to collect stones one by one and place them in a pouch/container.

3) “Knock Down the Giant”

Materials: empty bottles/stacked boxes as “giant”
Kids throw soft balls to knock it down and cheer:
“With God, giants fall!”

3 Arts Activities (Teacher-Friendly + Story-Based)

1) Paper Plate Shield of Faith

Kids decorate a shield with:

  • Faith

  • Courage

  • God Is Strong

  • Psalm 28:7

2) “5 Smooth Stones” Scripture Craft

Write one word on each stone:

  1. Faith

  2. Courage

  3. Prayer

  4. Trust

  5. God’s Power

3) David & Goliath Puppet Sticks

Cut out David and Goliath figures and glue onto sticks.

Prayer Prompt:
“Lord, help me trust You when I feel afraid. Thank You for being stronger than every giant. Amen.”
