God Chooses Ordinary People (Luke 1:26–33)

A Sunday School Lesson from Luke 1:26–33

Introduction

One of the most encouraging truths in the Bible is that God often chooses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes. Many children think that only famous, powerful, or important people can be used by God. But the Bible tells a very different story.

In Luke 1:26–33, we read about Mary, a young woman from a small town called Nazareth. She was not a queen, a ruler, or a wealthy leader. She lived a simple life. Yet God chose her for one of the most important roles in history — to become the mother of Jesus.

When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, he delivered a message that would change the world. Mary was surprised and probably felt many emotions. Yet her response shows us what true faith looks like.

This lesson helps children understand that God sees our hearts. He is not looking for perfect or famous people. Instead, God looks for people who trust Him and are willing to follow His plan.

Through Mary’s story, children will learn that God can use anyone who is willing to say yes to Him.

The Bible Story Explained

Mary lived in a small town called Nazareth. It was not a famous city, and Mary was not a well-known person. She was simply a young woman who loved God and wanted to live faithfully.

One day, something amazing happened. God sent an angel named Gabriel to visit Mary. The angel greeted her with an important message.

Gabriel told Mary not to be afraid because God had chosen her for a special purpose. He explained that she would give birth to a son and that his name would be Jesus.

The angel also told Mary that this child would be very special. Jesus would be called the Son of the Most High, and His kingdom would never end.

Mary was surprised and wondered how this could happen. The message was unexpected and difficult to understand.

However, even though Mary had questions, she trusted God. She believed that God’s plan was good and chose to obey Him.

Mary’s response shows us a beautiful example of faith. She was willing to follow God’s plan even when she did not know everything that would happen.

Because Mary trusted God, she became part of the greatest story ever told — the story of Jesus coming into the world to save people from sin.

Mary’s story reminds us that God does not only work through powerful leaders or famous people. He often works through ordinary people who trust Him.
